Chinese immigrants first came to the United States in the 1850s. He tried to escape the economic turmoil in China and try his luck in the California gold rush.
Towards the end of the gold rush, Chinese Americans were seen as cheap labor. They easily found jobs such as farmworkers, gardeners, housekeepers, laundry, and the most famous railroad workers. It was Chinese-Americans who built the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s.
In the 1870s, there was a general recession in the United States and there was little work to do.
Hostility towards Chinese-American workers has increased.
In 1882, things got so bad that Congress passed the China Refusal Act, banning almost all Chinese from immigrating to the United States. China did not become an ally of the United States until 1943 during World War II, and Congress eventually repealed the repeal law. However, the number of Chinese immigrants is limited to 105 per year.
In 1965, all restrictions were lifted and many Chinese entered the United States.
The first Chinatown appeared in 1900 in an American city.
Today, New York is the largest Chinatown and has a population of about 100,000 Chinese Americans.
